Most wrong ink orders come down to one mistake: buying by brand instead of by model. "HP ink" is not a product — HP alone sells cartridges, toner and ink bottles, and none of them fit each other. The same is true for Epson, Canon and Brother.

The good news is that every printer tells you exactly what it takes, and it takes about two minutes to find. This guide walks through that process, explains how the ink codes actually work, and covers the mistakes that cause the most returns.

Step 1 — Identify which system your printer uses

Before anything else, work out which of the three supply systems you are dealing with. They are not interchangeable.

If your printer has visible tanks on the front or side with coloured caps, it is an ink tank model and you need bottles, not cartridges. If it is a laser printer, you need a toner — laser printers do not use liquid ink at all.

This one distinction removes a large share of ordering errors on its own.

Step 2 — Find your exact printer model number

Your model number is more specific than the name on the box. Epson L3250 and Epson L3210 are different machines. Brother DCP-T430W and DCP-T530DW take an overlapping but not identical set of bottles.

Look in these places, in order:

The front panel — usually printed near the control buttons or under the scanner lid
The rear or underside label — the sticker carrying the serial number also carries the model
Inside the front cover — common on laser printers
The printer's own settings menu — under "Machine Information", "Device Info" or the network status sheet
Your original invoice or the box — the full model string appears on the barcode label

Write down the complete string, including the letters after the digits. Those suffixes matter: on Brother laser printers, DW means wireless with duplex, DN means network with duplex, and they can sit in different toner families.

Step 3 — Match the model to its ink code

Every manufacturer uses a code family, and each family covers a specific list of printer models. Once you know your model, the code is a lookup — not a guess.

Epson uses short numeric codes for its EcoTank bottles. The code sits on the bottle label and in the printer manual. A few of the common families in India:

003 — the current mainstream colour EcoTank family, covering models such as the L3250 and L3210
664 — the earlier colour EcoTank family, used by models like the L130 and L360
005 — monochrome EcoTank models such as the M1100 and M2110
001, 008, 057, T673, 774 — higher-capacity, photo and business EcoTank ranges

Epson codes do not cross over. A 003 bottle will not serve an L130, even though both are EcoTank printers.

HP splits ink tank supplies across two codes. On most Smart Tank and Ink Tank models, black is GT53 and the three colours are GT52 (cyan, magenta, yellow). This catches people out regularly: a "GT52 set" contains no black. If you are restocking a full set, you are buying GT53 plus GT52 colours. HP's laser printers are a separate system again, using numbered toner cartridges such as 88A, 119A or 151A depending on the LaserJet model.

Brother uses BT codes for ink tank bottles and TN codes for laser toner. On the DCP-T ink tank range, black and colour come from different families — for example BTD60BK or BTD100BK for black and BT5000 for cyan, magenta and yellow. On the laser side, TN codes such as TN-B021 map to specific series; a toner made for the B-series will not fit an L-series machine.

Canon ink tank bottles carry a GI prefix. GI-790 is the family used by the G-series MegaTank models most widely sold in India, including the G2012 and G3012. Other GI numbers — GI-70, GI-71 and so on — belong to different generations and are not substitutes.

If you are unsure after all this, the printer manual lists the supported codes explicitly, and so does the manufacturer's support page for your model number.

Step 4 — Buy colours individually, not as an assumption

Ink tank printers consume black far faster than colour. Most households and offices go through two or three black bottles before a colour bottle runs low. Buying a four-bottle set every time usually means paying for colour you do not yet need.

Two practical habits:

Restock black on its own between full-set purchases
Check the tank windows before ordering rather than waiting for a low-ink warning, which on tank printers is often driven by page count rather than an actual sensor

The reverse mistake is also common — ordering only colours and discovering that black is a different code entirely, as with HP's GT52 and GT53 split.

Five mistakes worth avoiding

Buying by printer brand alone. The brand narrows the field to dozens of incompatible products. Only the model number narrows it to one.
Assuming newer means compatible. Epson 003 replaced 664 in newer models, but it does not work in the older ones. Generational upgrades are not backwards compatible.
Ignoring the letters in the code. BTD60BK and BT5000C differ by more than colour — they are separate product lines with separate fill volumes.
Confusing toner with drum. Many laser printers use a separate drum unit with its own lifespan. If print quality is degrading in a repeating pattern down the page, the drum may be the issue, not the toner.
Ordering from a photo. Bottle and cartridge packaging looks near-identical across a code family. Match the printed code, not the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use ink cartridges in an ink tank printer?

No. Ink tank printers have permanently installed tanks refilled from bottles. There is no cartridge carriage to accept a cartridge.

Is Epson 003 the same as Epson 664?

No. They are different generations of EcoTank ink and cover different printer models. Check your model against the code before ordering.

Why does my HP ink set not include black?

On most HP Smart Tank and Ink Tank models, colour is GT52 and black is GT53. A GT52 set contains cyan, magenta and yellow only.

How do I know whether my printer takes toner or ink?

Laser printers take toner powder cartridges; inkjet and ink tank printers take liquid ink. If the printer warms up before printing and the output is dry immediately, it is almost certainly a laser.

What if my model number is not listed anywhere on the ink packaging?
